SHORTHAND - a completely new word for most people today. Some people laughs and asks "Little Hand?" And those who learnt Type at the institutions may know a bit about this. But, still they asks Is that a new language to write and type fast ? All these are false statements. Let's read on to know!
What is Shorthand?
Shorthand is a abbreviated symbolic phenomenon. Shorthand is fully based on 'sound writing'. Shorthand is full in symbols like Chinese, Japanese languages :P. If a word written in Shorthand that contains Dots, Dashes, Diphthongs etc., these are inserted based on Phonetic sound. Mainly Shorthand is used to save the time when taking Dictation if there are no recording devices available.
Shorthand is a abbreviated symbolic phenomenon, Fully based on "Sound Writing". For example, In english for the word "PoseSSION", We have to write "SSION" 5 letters. But, through shorthand you can present it with just a "SHUN" hook. i.e., We write specific symbols for indication and for frequent and most used words we use "Grammallogues, Logograms and Phrases" (For in, an, the, this, have, ..etc).
Again remembering you , Shorthand is completely based on "Sound Writing". The word what you spelt is what you write in Shorthand! It is used to save the time while taking Dictation.
Types & Founders of Shorthand:
There are 3 types of Shorthand systems are there and the most used & popular method is "PITMAN" shorthand. The available 3 methods of Shorthand are:

A Sample Paragraph of Shorthand in PITMAN's method:
Here is a sample of Shorthand in Pitman's method. Totally 151 words. All these can be written in just less than a minute. Few "High speed" persons can write in less than 30 seconds.
A Sample Paragraph in Pitman's Shorthand method, You can see the english version below: |
In the north-east corner of the park is a children's playground, which started in 1900 as a sandpit to be a "seaside in the park." In the distance are the towers of Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs on the former marshes on the north side of the Thames. This was the first part of London to have such tall buildings spring up, and the outlook from the park has changed dramatically since these skyscrapers have made their looming presence felt. Instead of views reaching into the distance, beyond London and on to Essex, these buildings seem to bring the other side of the Thames nearer and interrupt the spacious views that the inhabitants of Greenwich have enjoyed throughout history. It is possible that the Isle of Dogs was so called because Henry VIII, and possibly other royalty, kept hunting dogs there, to be fetched whenever they were needed.
